At a glance: which visa do I need?

  • Subclass 417 – Working Holiday: for eligible partner countries (includes the UK). Age usually 18–30, up to 35 for some nationalities.

  • Subclass 462 – Work and Holiday: different country list (includes the United States). Age 18–30. Some passports require education/English evidence or a government support letter; some 462 countries use an annual ballot.

UK note: From 1 July 2024, UK passport holders can be granted a 2nd and 3rd 417 without specified work (helpful later, not required for your first application). Age range 18–35.

Before you start: eligibility quick-check

  • You’re within the age range for your subclass and hold an eligible passport.

  • You won’t bring dependent children.

  • You can show enough funds to support yourself (evidence may be requested—see the subclass page for current guidance).

First 417/462 applications are made offshore, and if you apply while outside Australia you must remain outside until a decision is made. Declare your location accurately.

What you’ll need (documents)

  • Passport valid for the trip + digital photo.

  • Evidence of funds (e.g., bank statement).

  • Subclass 462 only (some countries): proof of education/English, and/or a government support letter (check your country’s page).

You might be asked later for health exams, biometrics or police checks—respond via your account if requested.

Apply online (step-by-step)

  1. Create/Log in to ImmiAccount.Choose your visa: Working Holiday (417) or Work and Holiday (462).

  2. Complete the form truthfully (including your current location).

  3. Upload documents (use the Document Checklist prompts)

  4. Pay the application charge and submit (fee changes—check the current amount during lodgement).

After you apply

  • Don’t arrange travel until you get your grant notice in writing. Processing times vary and can be delayed during peak periods.

  • Watch ImmiAccount/email for any requests (health, biometrics, extra info).

  • Once granted, review your visa conditions (e.g., the usual 6-month per-employer limit) in VEVO or your grant letter.

FAQs

Can I apply inside Australia for my first WHV?
